The list on this page is compiled from Baseball-Reference, which credits RBIs from 1907 to 1919 as recorded by baseball writer and historian Ernest Lanigan. One difference between the lists is that Babe Ruth is ranked third by Baseball-Reference, but seventh by MLB, which does not count Ruth's 224 RBI compiled before 1920. Cap Anson's run amounts are different depending on source and what hits are included in various leagues he played in. Starting with Harry Stovey passing Charley Jones in August 1885, there have been seven changes of the career home run leader. Stovey held the title twice, having lost it to Dan Brouthers in June 1887 and then regaining it from Brouthers in August 1889.
Kiner's seven consecutive titles from 1946 to 1952 are also the most consecutive home run titles by any player. Barry Bonds is MLB’s all-time (and single-season) home run king, but it’s not like he’s the only dude with a crown. If we only look at MLB’s career home run leaders, it’d leave out lots of players that had powerful tenures in the big leagues.

The next closest left fielder is Manny Ramirez with 555 homers, followed by Ted Williams with 521. In the league's inaugural 1876 season, Hall hit five home runs for the short-lived National League Philadelphia Athletics. In 1901, the American League was established and Hall of Fame second baseman Nap Lajoie led it with 14 home runs for the American League Philadelphia Athletics. Over the course of his 22-season career, Babe Ruth led the American League in home runs twelve times. Mike Schmidt and Ralph Kiner have the second and third most home run titles respectively, Schmidt with eight and Kiner with seven, all won in the National League.

Ruth was the all-time home run king from 1920 until '74, when Aaron passed him with his 715th career homer. Babe Ruth was first or second in the American League in home runs for every season from 1918 through 1933 except 1922 and set the single-season home run record four times. Going through milestone home runs for legendary players is fun, but what about going through a player’s overall home runs each year? Pete Alonso and Shohei Ohtani were the first ones to get this treatment, but they won’t be the last. Sometimes, it’s not enough to simply look at a legendary player’s overall performance. Pujols, the only positional home run leader who is currently active, has compiled 697 homers over 22 seasons in the Majors. A three-time MVP Award winner, Pujols became the ninth member of the 600 home run club in 2017 when he swatted a grand slam off Ervin Santana. However, Pujols actually ranks second when it comes to home runs hit as a first baseman , trailing Mark McGwire . Pujols has crushed 115 homers as a DH, 64 as a left fielder, 24 as a third baseman, seven as a pinch-hitter and six as a right fielder.
